Chinese AI companies have developed increasingly competitive large language models including DeepSeek (V3, R1), Alibaba's Qwen series, 01.AI's Yi models, Baichuan, and others. DeepSeek-R1 in particular demonstrated that frontier-level reasoning capabilities could be achieved at a fraction of typical training costs.
Significance
Chinese AI models challenge the assumption that only Western companies with massive compute resources can build frontier AI. Many Chinese models are open-weight, contributing to global AI research.
