Narrow AI (Weak AI)

AI systems designed to perform specific tasks within a limited domain, as opposed to Artificial General Intelligence which would handle any intellectual task.

Examples

Every AI system in production today is narrow AI: image classifiers, language models, recommendation engines, game-playing agents, autonomous vehicles. Each excels in its domain but cannot transfer to unrelated tasks.

Capabilities vs Limitations

Narrow AI can match or exceed human performance on specific tasks. But a chess AI can't hold a conversation, and a chatbot can't drive a car. The gap between narrow AI and AGI remains one of the fundamental challenges in the field.
